Terry Gilliam is to restart filming of his version of ‘Don Quixote’ in September. The original shoot of ‘The man who killed Don Quixote’ was beset with problems and abandoned in 2000. It suffered from budgetary problems and the actor playing Don Quixote, Jean Rochefort, suffered a hernia which stopped him getting on a horse.

Now the project has been revived and filming is planned this autumn in Segovia, Valencia and Toledo, with the film expected to be released next year.

The ex member of Monty Python met with the Madrid producers, Kanzaman, and members of the Segovia Film Office on Friday to make plans. A documentary ‘Lost in La Mancha’ will also show the problems that Gilliam has had in making the film.

Terry Gilliam’s Weird ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ Update, Via Writer Tony Grisoni

Terry Gilliam excels at bringing bizarre things into this world. Not terribly surprising for a guy whose brilliant early work came out of his involvement with the Monty Python comedy troupe. This is also the same man who gave us “Time Bandits,” “Brazil,” “The Fisher King” and the exceptional adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

By all reports, next up for Gilliam is his latest attempt to tell the story of Don Quixote. Sort of. “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” will follow an advertising executive who jumps back and forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. Today brings an odd update from the director, via his “Quixote” co-writer Tony Grisoni.

Speaking to Dread Central, Grisoni had this to say about a recent random encounter with Gilliam (via The Playlist):

“I ran into Terry the other day in London’s Oxford Street. He was strangely calm. I said I really hoped we’d get ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ going this spring. He smiled in a reassuringly zen-like manner and said that of course we would. Then he drifted away into the crowds. I think he may have found god. Or some money.”

Maybe he found both? Who knows. No matter– the takeaway is that “Quixote” is very much on the filmmaker’s mind. And that can only be a good thing. Gilliam previously confirmed that Robert Duvall would star in the movie, along with another, still-unnamed actor. There’s been no new information there, but if a spring shoot really is going to happen then we’ll certainly be hearing more soon enough.

Is Terry Gilliam’s Don Quixote Gaining Momentum?

We found this article very interesting. We had not heard that Terry was in Virginia to see Duvall. But, we think it’s wonderful news if he was.

Occasionally we get some juicy info from some of our reliable sources, and today we’ve got something potentially pretty cool. This is eyewitness stuff, folks, from a very trusted source. It seems that none other than Terry Gilliam (THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS) recently paid a visit to The Plains (little town in Virginia), where the great Robert Duvall lives. That’s right, Academy Award-winner Robert Duvall. Now why would the ex-Monty Python/genius director be seen in a modest rural town such as this? Apparently he was meeting with Duvall to discuss the long-delayed THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE movie with the seasoned actor. Some of you may recall Johnny Depp’s name being thrown around in conjunction with a DON QUIXOTE movie recently, but the project has seen a series of delays through the years for one reason or another. Things Progressing Nicely On “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote co-writer, Tony Grisoni, recently talked to Beaks of Ain’t It Cool News about the film in which he gave us a bit of a status update.

Beaks: I must ask where you are with THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE.

Grisoni: I’ll tell you where we are with it. We’ve got a new screenplay, and I just did a rewrite on it the other day. Jeremy Thomas is producing. All we’ve got to do now is find the money. That’s the easy bit. (Laughs)

Beaks: Do you find that people are reluctant to invest because of the perceived bad mojo the project seems to invite?

Grisoni: Absolutely not. People are reluctant to invest in anything. (Laughs) But they will.

Beaks: You’ve been working on this project for so long. Is it still fun for you? Are you still discovering things in the story?

Grisoni: When Jeremy Thomas finally got the rights so that we could finally begin to work on it, ten years had passed [since the first attempt]. I was really upset because I really wanted to go back into that world. But Terry and I talked about the story, and we re-read the script, and we discovered what we thought was a work of genius probably wasn’t a work of genius. In fact, we read it and thought, “This is not good. Why were we going to make that?” So we started to talk about the bits that didn’t work and the bits that might work, and we completely re-thought the whole thing. That gave us a huge amount of momentum, and I think it’s a far better screenplay that we’ve got. It’s serendipitous, but I think it’s a good thing that we’re making a new start on it. It’s a far stronger project.

Beaks: I think any lover of cinema is rooting for you guys to pull this thing together, get it up before the cameras, and make a great movie.

Grisoni: But we’re up against it. We’re up against the movie you’ve all got in your head.

Beaks: I think we’re open to any possibility. Now that you’ve rewritten it, we can’t possibly know what to expect. All is goodwill.

Grisoni: But you’re right, it needs to be done, doesn’t it?

Beaks: It would be a tragedy if it wasn’t.

Grisoni: I know. Also, I think Terry would become some awful character in an Edgar Allan Poe short story, like he can’t die. That would be horrible.
